Hello!
My life seems to be getting more and more ‘weird’ as time goes on. Can you believe that at the grand old age of 36 (I’m desperately holding on to that number for at least another few days!) I’ve just had my first ever shaving lesson?
John and I were sat one evening debating the pros and cons of shaving on an expedition (I know, we talk about such important issues!) when our attention turned to discussing the most efficient way to shave. A quick search on ‘google’ turned up the ‘Shave Doctor’ Mark Sproston and a call seeking advice was made (I know, I can’t believe I did it either). Quite surprisingly Mark answered the call, we had a quick chat, then he offered me the chance to hook up with him for a shaving lesson. A shaving lesson? I thought for a close shave you just press the blade against your skin and scrape hard!
When I turned up at Label Mens Grooming Salon in Stoke-on-Trent (if you ever get the chance to call in, you won’t regret it) I had no idea that there was so much science involved with shaving! Mark talked me through the history of shaving; the barbers pole ‘blood and bandages’ to signify the presence of a guy who would cut you open, pull out teeth, cut hair and give you a shave; the fact that Gillette set the standard for the angle of the cutting blade at 30 degrees around 109 years ago and LOADS more fascinating facts. Next I learnt all about skin types, growth, the theory behind the perfect shave, then we got to work on a very nervous but somewhat trusting model called Rob.
Rob laid back in the chair and prepared himself for the worst. First I applied a facial scrub, then a hot towel, next was oil, then the shave crème (applied with a brush), then Mark handed me the razor – an mischievous looking cut throat! I wasn’t nervous at all as I approached Robs face with the blade, but his face in the newspaper photographs says it all! Check out http://tinyurl.com/yetfgyl John’s up next... if I can catch him!
By the end of the day I’d shaved a few people with not one mistake. It was a different story when I tried it on myself in the mirror though – lets just say that plastic surgery isn’t my forte! All of the superb shaving products were supplied by Mark through his company http://shavedoctor.co.uk/ and are available to buy on line (did that sound like my first ever sales pitch or what?!). We thank Justin for his kind contribution to our weekly Blog..we hope it wasn't too painful after training...
ShaveDoctor Sponsors Great Cause
THE LAST GREAT CHALLENGE: The ShaveDoctor recently visited a grooming lounge to train people for a charity challenge.
The ShaveDoctor visited newly-opened Label Professional Male Grooming Lounge in Hanley to teach two men the art of wet shaving.
Mr Sproston aka The ShaveDoctor, has trained people all over the world how to carry out a traditional shave from teaching hair and beauty professionals to showing Joe Public how to shave properly in their own bathrooms..
John Wilton-Davies and Justin Miles, from Exeter are raising funds for the British Heart Foundation in November by setting off on an expedition to reach the South Pole and return fully unsupported, something not attempted to since Captain Scott all those years ago!
They will be shaving every 3 -4 days in extreme freezing conditions with the ShaveDoctor products that will be warmed up to temperatures of around -10 using the camping stoves in their well equipped tent, the products have been tested at around this temperature already and they still perform incredibly offering a comfortable and brilliant close shave.
Shaun Robson, manager of Label in Town Road, said the fund-raisers approached The ShaveDoctor to teach them the art of wet shaving so they could do it en route.
Mr Robson, who uses The ShaveDoctor products at his business and are official stockists, offered his premises as a training base.
He said: "I felt it an honour to be able to support."
Pictured right is what faces the 2 men in November and the scenery will hardly change over 77 days of trekking in -30 conditions..

ShaveDoctor Trains Brand New Salon
The ShaveDoctor was called in to train a key member of the LABEL Male Grooming company in Hanley (Stoke on Trent) of how to perform the professional barber wet shave and boy was Jordan under pressure to deliver not only good shaves during the 2 day course but GREAT shaves as the salon had booked shaves in on Saturday 19th Dec for Christmas etc....just a day after training!!
This fella didn't let me or his manager down and he delivered the GREAT shaves we and the client were looking for and so much so that a ShaveDoctor Travel Set was also sold at the end of the shave treatment!!
Well done Jordan.
Label Male Grooming also offers their client's something a bit different from your standard barber shop as you are greeted very warmly by Shaun, Label's salon manager who takes your coat and then invites you to taste one of their house coffee's or the huge hot chocolate smothered with a layer of cream and topped with marshmallow...and on that note of hot drinks during the cold snap I would also like to thank Tracey for her kind hospitality on Thursday and to Shaun for keeping me topped up with great coffee over the 2 days..
All of the clients are then escorted upstairs to have their hair shampooed followed by a relaxing haircut and if you are after more relaxtion then you can choose between 2 massage relaxtion chairs either whilst you wait for your haircut, shave or a coffee....or after!
What more could a guy want?
We wish Shaun, Rob and all at Label Male Grooming a very sucessful 2010.

Shave Doctor Behind Cancer Charity
Shave Doctor are supporting Alex and this great cause.
Supporting Movember 2009 & The Prostate Cancer Charity
What is Movember?
Movember is an annual, month-long celebration of the moustache, highlighting men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer.
Mo Bros, supported by their Mo Sistas, start Movember (November 1st) clean shaven and then have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their moustache. During Movember, each Mo Bro effectively becomes a walking billboard for men’s health and, via their Mo, raises essential funds and awareness for Movember’s men’s health partner – The Prostate Cancer Charity.
What many people don’t appreciate is that one man dies every hour of prostate cancer in the UK, more than 35,000 men will be diagnosed this year and that prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. Facts like these have convinced us that you should get involved and we are hoping that you will support this great cause.
